On Sunday, June 3, Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire (Volcán de Fuego) erupted, engulfing communities in its path and causing thousands of people to be displaced from their homes. A downpour and more volcanic activity to date has made recovery and rescue efforts challenging for responders. Thankfully, though the volcano is about a three-hour drive from Lake Atitlan where many of our long-term friends and sponsored children live, the ash and debris has not reached their communities.
After assessing the situation and reaching out to our representatives and partners on the ground about the conditions, we know that people in the affected region regularly collect drinking water from the rainwater. Now, their supplies are contaminated by the volcanic ash and other debris. World Hope International is working to address the need by distributing water filters, solar power systems, and other urgent supplies as needed. Here are some ways you can make a difference:
Pray for the families in Guatemala and the areas affected.
If you prefer to give financially, all funds collected will be forwarded to Global Partners/World Hope International to provide help directly to the disaster victims. Please make checks payable to Christ Wesleyan Church with “Guatemala Disaster Relief” in the memo section or give online.
Join the disaster relief team to deliver solar panels and water filters to the people in Guatemala (dates to be announced shortly).
